We arose at 7:00 AM at the Econo Lodge in Summerside, PEI, had a continental breakfast, and made the 3-mile drive to Summerside Golf & CC arriving at about 8:00 AM. We were 20 minutes early, and fortunately there was an opening at 8:10 AM so we were off ahead of schedule. Sunnyside is a very pretty golf course in very good condition. The greens were excellent, the best we have seen so far. The sand traps couuld have been better, but then I (Jim) have never seen a trap that I liked! My goal to break 90, but I made double bogey on the 9th hole for 46, and triple bogey on #18 hole for a 45and 18 hole total of 91 (Course Rating = 69.5, Slope = 122, and yardage 6136). The pressure to break 90 was just too much, I guess. Pat shot a 105 (Course Rating = 73.6, Slope = 126, and yardage 5713). She played really well, breaking her goal of 110 by 5 shots. The course was fairly flat, so we walked the full 18-holes using pull carts. On the final five holes we joined the twosome of Frank McGill and Bob Clark, who had been in front of us (see picture below). They are both members and play several times a week. We had a very enjoyable time playing with them. They gave us some insight to the final holes, which we didn’t have on the earlier holes. The weather was in the mid-seventies and fairly humid with the wind blowing at about 10 mph. We would like to thank Myrna Millar, the pro shop manager and the cart attendant for their hospitality. We only feel sorry that we had to leave right away and won’t be able to play the course again. After golf we left immediately for our next destination, a 6-hour drive to Sydney, Nova Scotia. The last 70 miles of the drive were desolate with rolling hills and valleys, and marvelous sights of the bay. We arrived at the Quality Inn in Sydney about 7:30 PM. The motel is about 6 miles from the Marine Atlantic ferry dock where we will embark at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning for a 6-hour ferry ride to Newfoundland, arriving at 3:00 PM. We will play golf at St. Andrews Na Creige Golf Course at 4:00 PM (about 30 miles from the ferry dock). After golf, we’ll return to the ferry for an 11:59 PM return trip to North Sydney, NS, arriving at 6:00 AM. We have dormitory sleepers on the boat, so we’ll be getting our night’s sleep on the boat. Upon arriving at North Sydney, we will make the 3-hour drive to Abercrombie Golf Course in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia for our Nova Scotia round. At this point we will have played six of the 10 Canadian Provinces. We won’t see Canada again until we play Glenboro Country Club in Glenboro, Manitoba on Wednesday, September 24th. Glenboro is my (Jim) dad’s hometown. He lived there from 1902 through 1910, age 5-14. Needless to say, our excursion to Newfound will keep us busy, and tomorrow night we won’t be staying at a motel (ferry all night), therefore, the Tuesday journal of our trip will be a day late.
