We left the Super 8 Motel in Augusta, Maine a little before 9 AM, and headed south to Somersworth, New Hampshire for our 14th day of golf at Sunningdale Golf Club. We were early for our tee time but we were able to get on the course right away, and were paired with Roger Goulet and Carl Doore (see picture). They were very helpful in guiding us around the course. Sunningdale is a 9-hole course built on rolling hills, so we were prepared for some uneven lies. The fast greens are severely sloped, and the tree-lined fairways are narrow. Roger and Carl only played nine holes, but we played the course again to complete our 18-holes. Both of us scored better the second time around. Jim shot 87 (yardage = 6360). Pat shot 113 (5162)
We want to thank the pro shop staff and the members who were extremely friendly and courteous to us during our round at Sunningdale.
After our round we had an enjoyable conversation with Carl Waterman, the pro shop manager and two long-time members of Sunningdale, Herman Canney and Ray Merchant (see picture). We then left the golf course and headed for Interstate 95 and the Johnsons in Rhode Island. I-95 took us from New Hampshire south into Massachusetts, around to the west of Boston and south to Rhode Island. The Johnsons live very close to highway US1 (this is The Boston Post Rd, and before the interstate highway system it was the main highway between New York City and Boston). Arnie and Joan have a beautiful home on a hill that overlooks Block Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. They have a fantastic panoramic view of the ocean. As we write this early Sunday, we are looking out over about a mile of trees and greenery to the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. From time to time the Block Island ferry comes into view, and many ocean going ships pass by as they traverse to and from east coast ports. See tomorrow’s journal (day 15) for a picture of the view as we are seeing it.
We will be staying with the Johnsons for four-nights as we will be commuting to Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island golf courses. Joan and Arnie have been our friends since 1957 when we became next-door neighbors in Kingston, New York. Arnie and I were both engineers at IBM in Kingston. We are thankful to God that we are all in reasonable good health (for our age) and that we are able to have this time to reminisce and enjoy each other’s company.
