Scenes on the golf course.
We had a 10AM tee time at Rock Creek Park Golf Course, one of the three golf courses in Washington DC. Our friends, Liz and Serge decided they would join us for our 22nd day of golf. They knew that we were going to play Rock Creek, so they played the course last week, just to see what it was like. It took about 20 minutes to get from their home to the golf course, and we teed off with the temperature in the high 60’s. The course is not as long as the other courses we have played so far; however it has several challenging holes. The front nine has fairways that are quite open, but severely sloped. We all felt that the back nine was much more difficult because of the very tight fairways. Tee shots had to be straight and accurate. Jim shot 80 (yardage 4715) and Pat shot 94 (yardage 4495). Liz and Serge were quite happy because the both played quite well--- Serge says that he had his career round (89). We were very happy that they were able to play golf with us today.

We want to especially thank the starter Neil Hoffman who got us out on time and made sure that we had carts for the hilly course. By the time we finished the round (about 2:30 PM), the temperature had climbed to the high 80’s, and it was quite humid, so we were glad that we decided to ride instead of walk.

After our round, Charles Scott, the pro shop manager, and Michael Koretz, the pro shop attendant, were most cordial, and our day at Rock Creek was a very pleasant one. We are looking forward to going out to dinner with Liz and Serge and spending the evening with them. We have been so busy writing our journals that we haven’t had too much time to visit and talk about the good times we shared with them some 45+ years ago in Kingston, New York.

An added extra: The golf course is fairly close to Walter Reed Hospital, and as luck would have it, President Bush and his caravan motored by on his way to the hospital (supposedly to visit wounded troops). The natives are used to this, but the two of us thought it was quite exciting. There was a helicopter flying overhead until the motorcade passed through.

We also thought it was very interesting that in the middle of Washington DC there were so many deer on the golf course (see picture).
