Our trip from the Triaus to the golf course in Virginia was supposed to be an easy 20-mile drive with a short ferry ride across the Potomac to Leesburg, Virginia. However, we missed a turn (the roads were not identified sufficiently) and we ended up going about 20 miles out of our way. When we hit the Potomac River we realized that we had missed our turn and gone too far. We decided to take the River road north, figuring that eventually we had to come to the ferry dock; however, the river road turned into a one-lane gravel road, but we faithfully forged onward parallel to the Potomac. Lo and behold, we finally came to the White’s Ferry dock. There is a lot of history in this part of the country and one could imagine Yankee and Rebel soldiers stalking each other 140 years ago, or George Washington riding his horse along this same road 80 years earlier. We were lost for a while, but it was worth it. NOTE: We decided to play our Virginia round at Goose Creek Golf Club (www.goosecreekgolf.com) in Leesburg, Virginia because it was only a short distance from the Triaus; however, there is a 40-mile stretch of the Potomac River without a bridge (from northern Washington DC to Frederick, Maryland), therefore the only means of crossing to Virginia is to take White’s Ferry. The front nine at Goose Creek starts off with two long par 5’s, both uphill. The course is a very nice layout; however, it is not in the best shape. The greens, tees and fairways have been damaged by fungus, resulting in some temporary tees and one temporary green. The course runs along the creek, so water comes into play on several of the holes. The course is also quite hilly, so there are many side-hill lies. Jim shot an 89 (yardage 6001), and Pat shot 111 (yardage 5235). We enjoyed the course and would play it again if we lived in the area. Thanks to Brian Haley for his courtesy and hospitality in the pro shop.
