The 120 mile drive across western Iowa was extremely beautiful. The morning sun brought out the various hues of the crops. In Iowa one sees for miles in any direction, and the corn is 7 or 8 feet high. Some of it has been cut, and the cut fields, non-cut fields, and a few soy bean fields gives one an impression that he/she is viewing a giant patch-work quilt. (Jan Szulczewski – you ought to take a look at the fields of western Iowa on a bright Sunday morning. It might give you some ideas for your quilts).
We crossed the “Mighty MO” (Missouri River) at 10:30 AM into South Sioux City, Nebraska and were at the South Ridge Golf Course at 11:00 AM. Judy Curry, the golf shop manager, greeted us with open arms and treated us as if we were visiting celebrities. She presented us with a “logoed” golf ball of the golf course and a cooler with cold drinks for our 18-hole round. We are very appreciative for the “comping” of green fees and cart fees as well as the other amenities.
We teed off about 11:15 and finished our 18-holes at 2:30 PM. We enjoyed the golf course. At first glance we thought that we would really be able to score well because the holes are relatively short, but the fairways are narrow, so the ball had to be driven straight. The course was baked-out from the dry condition, but the greens and approaches were very nice. The weather was great – in the low 80s with clear skies and a slight breeze. Jim shot 85 (yardage = 6000) and Pat shot 101 (yardage = 5200). After the round we left the golf course and headed for South Dakota.
