This morning we drove for over an hour on I25 from our motel to Las Vegas, New Mexico. The course we played today is New Mexico Highlands University Golf Course. When we arrived, we were greeted and checked in by Julio Maestas, a student who attends the University. He works part-time at the golf course while he attends the University. Unfortunately, there were no power carts available when we arrived, so we walked the first nine. By the time we finished nine holes, we were able to get a power cart. The course is relatively easy to walk; however, the winds were very strong and gusty, and with the high altitude (5500 feet) we were happy to have a cart for the remaining 9-holes. Temperature when we finished was in the mid 80s; however, the strong winds made it feel cooler.

The course is quite dry and the fairways are not in good shape. The greens are pretty good, as are the approaches. Some of the greens are quite undulating and putts have many extreme breaks.

Today there was a group of golf course architects touring the course to make recommendations for redesign and reconstruction of the course. The architects were the people who were tying up the golf carts. After talking to them, we learned that some of them had designed a few of the courses that we have played or will play (see picture).

When we finished, there was another student, Miguel Lucero, from the University manning the pro shop. He signed our verification sheet, and we were on our way again north on I25 to Trinidad, CO. The temperature at Trinidad at our arrival was 88 degrees.

Scores for today were: Jim 89 (yardage = 6109) and Pat shot 111 (yardage = 5320). Pat missed a four-foot putt on the last hole, or she would have shot 110 (her goal).

We had an hour and half drive north on I25 to our next destination, Trinidad, Colorado. The temperature at Trinidad at our arrival was 88 degrees. We will be playing Trinidad Golf Course tomorrow at 9:00AM.
