Since we had a full day ahead of us; we had the alarm set for 6:00AM wake up. The golf course was a 20 minute drive from the motel, so we left the motel at 6:45 thinking that we had plenty of time. What we didn’t count on was fog and an accident on I-85! We finally arrived at Dogwood Golf Club in Austell, Georgia at 8:00AM. Waiting for us was Dao Vu, newscaster and her cameraman Richard Campbell from the Weather Channel along with the General Manager of the golf club, Roy Gilbreath.

The Weather Channel advertises a personal weather forecast for anyone traveling who wants to know what the weather will be for his/her travels. We emailed them to find the forecast for the balance of our trip. We received an immediate reply saying that the Weather Channel would like to do a feature story of our venture! They spent at least half an hour interviewing us, both individually and together. We finally teed off around 8:30AM along with Dao and Richard, who was photographing us along the way. After the third hole, they had enough pictures and were on their way. This should air on Saturday and Sunday morning, and occasionally thereafter.

The course was busy and the going somewhat slow. On the fourth hole we became a foursome as we were joined by the twosome behind us. Gil Caro and Randy Rakes are members of the club and they were able to offer us advice on shot selection. Gil plays the acoustical guitar for a local Latino family supper club. His music repertoire is Latino and soft rock. After the round he presented us with two of his CDs which we’ve been enjoying as we are driving along the highway. Randy is a corporate pilot and is vice president of Flight Works. We had a very enjoyable time playing our round with them.

Prior to teeing off, we had conversations with Roy Gilbreath, the General Manager of Dogwood Golf Club as well as Gene Boggs, the starter and marshal. We thank them for their cordial welcome to Dogwood Golf Club. The course is in good shape and we enjoyed our round of golf. Jim shot 88 (yardage = 5927) and Pat shot 105 (yardage = 5174)

We were on our way around 1:30PM heading for Atlanta Airport to pick up our daughter, Lisa who flew in from Grand Rapids to join us for the last four states of our trip (except Hawaii). She will play golf four days, then drive our van back to Michigan after dropping us off at Cincinnati Airport for our flight to Hawaii.

Lisa was waiting at the airport when we drove up (she had landed about half an hour earlier). The three of us then drove through Atlanta and on to Charlotte, North Carolina where we will be spending two days/nights with Sara and Brett Frankenberg and their two daughters, Sydney and Kate. (Sara is the niece of Jim and Pat – she is the daughter of Bill and Gloria Healey. Bill, now deceased, was Jim’s brother).
