Welcome to Ontario - border crossing

Rory and Dwayne MacLennan (son and father) – golf course owners. The elder Mr. MacLennan founded the golf course over 40 years ago.
Today is our first foray of the trip into Canada. We will be in Canada for six of the next seven days to play courses in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. We will sandwich Vermont (USA) between Ontario and Quebec. Ontario is the birthplace of my (Jim) dad, and my Canadian heritage.

We spent Wednesday night at a Super 8 motel just south of Watertown, NY. We were up at 6:30 with the intent of an early start; however, we spent 30 to 40 minutes composing and sending emails in response to received emails that needed immediate action. We also received a call from WJR Detroit with a request for a telephone interview with Frank Beckman’s 90 minute talk show (9 AM to 10:30 AM) We did the interview on tape (we couldn’t do it live because we would be on the road and our cell phone had poor reception in that part of upstate New York. Presumably it was aired during the show this morning. Even though WJR is a powerful station, we were too far away from Detroit to receive WJR’s signal on the car radio. Perhaps some of our Michigan friends/family will have heard the interview and recorded it.

We have received requests for several media interviews and have had requests to appear on national talk shows. Never in our wildest dreams did we think there would be so much interest in two septuagenarians attempting to play 61 straight days of golf!! We only have 6 days under our belts so we have a way to go. Our luck has been really good so far. We made all our plane connections the first three days, and the weather has been great. We can only hope that our good luck continues to hold up.

At any rate; we left the motel at 9:30 AM. We crossed the Canadian border at the St. Lawrence River/Thousand Islands Bridge, and arrived at Summerheights Golf Links in Cornwall, Ontario at 10:50 AM for our 11:00 scheduled tee time. Unfortunately, neither Rory MacLennan nor his dad (the owners of the facility) were there today. Rory was in Rhode Island for a Shriner’s convention, and the elder Mr. MacLennan was in town on other business.

The golf shop staff was very cordial to us, and we were soon off the first tee. There are two eighteen-hole courses, and we played the West course. There was only one foursome in front of us and they waved us through as soon as we caught them. We played the course in three hours and were done at 2:15 PM. We didn’t see much of the North course, but we thought the West course was a terrific layout. The greens were considerably slower than those of Terry Hills (NY) yesterday, so we again had a few problems with 3 putts. Today’s scores: Jim shot 89 (yardage 5931, rating 68.0/slope 113) and Pat shot 109 (yardage 5301, rating 70.0/slope 113).

Mr. MacLennan (Sr.) farmed the land at one time, but he built the first course forty plus years ago, and the MacLennan family now has 36 holes and a nice clubhouse facility. The Links are adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway (QEW 201), and if anyone reading this is ever driving the QEW 201 at Cornwall, we would recommend that you stop and play Summerheights. The golf course personnel will make you feel right at home.

Again, our thanks to the MacLennans for their invitation to play Summerheights and for “comping” our fees.
